Here’s a little something I wrote in 2007 for all those brothers and sisters like me who watch Tavis Smiley’s “State of The Black Union” every year! Please read, enjoy, and discuss/debate amongst yourselves:)One day I was sitting around watching one of those Tavis Smiley “State of the Black Union” forums on C-SPAN, and I wondered why us Black folk are always racking our brains to find solutions to our collective plight when the answers are all around us. Now I’m not claiming to have all the answers ’cause I’m just a “bougie middle class negro”, however I know that we don’t need a “covenant” to get our act together. We just need to make some common sense decisions in a few major areas:

EDUCATION:
1) Don’t allow your kids to be promoted to the next grade until you have documented proof that they can read on grade level.

2) Aside from feeding, clothing, and housing your family, your primary goal in life should be to do everything humanly possible to make sure that your kids graduate high school and are at least prepared to go to college, whether they decide to or not.

3) Whenever you’re schedule allows it, make appointments with your child’s teacher’s, counselors, and school administrators. Furthermore, make sure that your contributions to the meetings are positive and productive. Kids take their cues from you. They value the things that you value. If you (or an available family representative) are not taking interest in their academic progress, don’t expect them to give a damn about their grades. If you fathers out there can attend all your son’s football and basketball games, then you have time to attend parent/teacher conference nights.

4) Hold your kids accountable for their behavior, attendance, punctuality and preparedness to learn…and if your child is lucky enough to have a Black teacher or principal, work with them to improve you child’s performance rather than expecting them to give your child “breaks” just because they are Black.

FINANCE:
1) Every time you feel the urge to by a lottery ticket, some cigarettes, or an alcoholic beverage, stop yourself and put that money in a bank account that could eventually be used towards your child’s education.

2) Being a homeowner is always preferable to being a renter. Homes help to create wealth for you, while renting just makes some other guy richer. On your own home, even if you have to live with several other working relatives in order to do it. We may snicker and laugh at the Asian and Hispanic stereotype of 2 or more families living in a house, but they could be laughing all the way to the bank because they know something that we don’t.

3) If you’re driving a brand new car with rims and you’re renting…you are a broke negro waiting to happen.

4) Babies don’t need to wear brand name anything. Toddlers outgrow clothes from Nike, Reebok, and The Children’s Place just as fast as they outgrow clothes from Walmart, Target, and Payless.

SOCIAL:

1) If you don’t have a college education or a nice home, stop hating on brothers and sisters who do. Talk to them….get to know them…I’m sure that there are things you could learn from each other. When you see a successful person, learn what made them that way.

2) Don’t cry about what the white man has done to you unless a white person has actually done something to you. You live in an age where you are allowed to get a free education in any public school in America. You can ride in any part of the bus you want to, and you don’t have to go to any “colored establishments” anymore. Yet there were poor African-Americans who actually did live in those times who have managed to become doctors, lawyers, congressmen, celebrities, entrepreneurs, CEOs, and college presidents. Your excuses for not succeeding are becoming increasingly limited.

3) Always aim higher. Every time you see a Black athlete, actor, singer , or rapper that makes a lot of money, remember that it’s usually an even wealthier white owner, producer, or CEO that signs their checks. Don’t ever be satisfied with being a “high-priced slave” when their might be a chance for you to own the whole plantation.

I love America in general, and my Black brothers and sisters in particular. We have so much potential, we’ve done enough talking about it….let’s start realizing it.

Over the past three years or so, I, for a variety of reasons, have had to just “grin and bear it” while a significant number of my middle class friends, colleagues, and associates repeatedly and rabidly rant about how President Obama–a wealthy, biracial, former head of the Harvard Law Review, is some sort of “socialist” Robin Hood who wants to take from the rich and give to the poor. The irony, of course is that President Obama is advocating cutting taxes for many of the same middle class, rank-and file Republicans who have ranted the loudest against him. So I began doing some research to give credible support to what I already believed in my heart and mind: President Obama is NOT a socialist. He may be a politician, a pragmatist, a “rockstar”, and any number of other things—but he is NOT a socialist. So since I’m mad as heck, and I’m not going to take it anymore, I’d like to take this time to quickly elaborate on why, when it comes to Obama, his detractors are entitled to their own opinions, but they’re not entitled to their own facts:

Fact #1: The tax rate on the wealthy was greater under Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Clinton and the entire first Reagan term than it currently is under Obama. The top tax rates under FDR, Truman and Eisenhower were all in excess of 90%. They dropped to 70% during the Kennedy/Johnson /Nixon years. It was 50% during through the entirety of Reagan’s first term, until he cut it to 35%. Clinton raised it back to approximately 40% . Technically Bush II’s 35% was higher than the rate was under Bush I when the tax rate on the richest of the rich was as low as 29% in some cases. Currently, the top tax rate is the same now as it was under Bush II. Even if Obama had been successful in raising the top tax rate back to “Clintonian levels”, he still wouldn’t have even come remotely close to the top tax rates from 1942 through 1986. So how come no one ever called Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, or Clinton a socialist?

Fact #2 The concepts of welfare, social security, medicare , and government funded healthcare were not the “brainchildren” of President Obama. They were here long before he was even born. Those of us who didn’t sleep through our history classes remember that in 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt implemented the “New Deal”– a cluster of programs designed to produce government jobs for the unemployed, economic recovery, and Wall Street reform. Social Security, the FDIC, and the Securities Exchange Commission are all components of the “New Deal” that have survived through every administration from Roosevelt’s through Obama’s. Not even the most conservative of our conservative Presidents have seen fit, or been able, to get rid of them. Several political historians have stated that as early as 1912, Theodore Roosevelt included universal healthcare as part of his political platform. About twenty years later, Teddy’s cousin, FDR, proposed making healthcare a part of the “New Deal” but abandoned the idea after receiving much the same criticism from his political opponents that Obama currently receives from his. In the sixties, President Lyndon Johnson didn’t push for universal healthcare, but did sign medicare and medicaid into law, which still exist even today. Surprisingly, even Richard Nixon had his own plan for universal healthcare which, ironically was thwarted by Ted Kennedy because it didn’t have a “single-payer” option. Even though Clinton’s healthcare plan failed, in part because of Mrs. Clinton’s involvement in it, Bush II expanded upon LBJ’s medicare plan with a prescription drug benefit for senior citizens. President Obama is merely one President, in a long line of Presidents from both parties, who have pursued the prospect of universal health care. The only substantive difference between Obama’s healthcare plan and all the others that were proposed from 1912-2000 is that Obama’s plan was passed in both houses and was signed into law. Look folks, everything I told you is common knowledge to anyone with enough intellectual curiosity to bother to look it up. If we as a nation are going to have any sort of intelligent conversation or debate about the issues that plague our great nation, we’ve got to move away from overly emotional partisan hyperbole on both sides, and deal in simple facts and truths. Let’s stop with all the ridiculous Glenn Beck chalkboard explanations, the venomous Keith Olbermann “special comments”, and the fearmongering Alex Jones New World Order conspiracy theories because they don’t get us anywhere. Recognize the standard modern political pundit or commentator for exactly who he or she is—a person who gets paid for spouting talking points with more cleverness, wit, volume, or feigned indignance than the next guy (or gal). We are better than that. We MUST be better than that. If you don’t like President Obama’s rhetoric, than say so. If you don’t like his policies, than say so. If you think he’s taking the country in the wrong direction, than say so…but don’t call him a socialist, unless you’re willing to paint a whole lot of other Presidents (from BOTH parties) with the same “broad brush”.

I love professional American football. Over the course of my life, I’ve played football on elementary school playgrounds, in neighbors’ back yards, at summer camps, and in jam-packed high school stadiums. As a kid, I used to trade football cards, and played my handheld Mattel electronic football game until the buttons literally fell off. I have played just about every type of football video game that has ever existed. Since the age of 5, the only time I can remember not watching football on TV were those rare Sundays or Monday nights when I wasn’t within a 100 mile radius of a working television. I even coached high school football for five years. Moreover, ever since the creation of the NFL network, there have been numerous nights when I have been lulled into a peaceful slumber by the euphonic and dulcet tones of Rich Eisen or Steve Sabol. So when I found out that there might not be a 2011-12 pro football season, I naturally experienced the five stages of grief. At first, I was in a state of denial that wouldn’t even let me consider the possibility of a work stoppage and a I scoffed at anyone who even hinted that one might occur. Shortly thereafter, I became angry, and cursed the greed of “millionaire players” and “billionaire owners” who were so self-absorbed that they would let their own pride, avarice, and pettiness get in the way of the enjoyment of millions of middle-aged frustrated former high-school jocks, fantasy-football playing nerds, and impressionable grade school-age boys. A few weeks later, I began a bargaining process by trying to convince myself that college football was just as exciting as pro football and had the same high quality of play. As the months passed, and the draft occurred, I became depressed by the fact that there might not be training camps or a preseason where I could find out if Cam Newton would actually be able to comprehend the Panther playbook , or if McNabb would force Mike Shanahan to eat his words from last season, or even if Brett Favre would get the “itch” just one more time. Now, I find myself in a mental state where I have accepted the fact that there just might not be any pro football this Fall. I think I’ll sign up for a Sunday afternoon “spinning class” at my local gym. My wife is excited by the prospect that my fall weekends will be spent steam cleaning the carpets that my dog and cat like to occasionally “have their way with”. Oh and by the way, I just went to the closet, and broke out my old University of Miami jerseys and hats. I figure with all the NFL players that “The U” puts out, following them on Saturdays will be kind of like watching pro football anyway.

Four years ago, I wrote a piece that now seems almost prophetic. In it, I ask America in general, and black people in particular, if they are truly ready for a “Black President”. I think the following excerpt is eerily prophetic especially when one considers all the flack that President Obama has received all along from the Right, and the recent, well-publicized criticism he has received from modern Black icons of the Left like Dr. Cornel West. Read the excerpt and tell me if you think I was onto something:

“I’m not sure that my fellow African-Americans and other people of color have truly thought about what an Obama presidency will actually mean. If Barack wins, all of those African-American scholars, who’ve made their money and reputations writing books about how white teachers can’t effectively teach young Black boys, are going to have some explaining to do if it is discovered that most of his teachers were caucasian. If Barack wins, a lot of disgruntled veterans of the civil rights movement will no longer be able to laugh dismissively at people they call naive for saying that ‘In America, anyone can grow up to be whatever they want to be.’ If Barack wins, how many affirmative action programs will be dismantled by employers and college presidents who will argue that the election of a Black president is a clear example of how Affirmative Action programs have become obsolete and unnecessary? If Barack wins, will African-Americans embrace and overcome the new challenges that will result from having a ‘Black president’, or will we quickly become disillusioned, call him an ‘Uncle Tom’, sit idly by while our more established ‘Black leaders’ slowly undermine him, and generally make such a mess of the whole situation that America might not even exist as we know it before another Black candidate is considered? Only time will tell.”

See there? I told you the excerpt was eerily prophetic!

The following passage is a commentary I wrote in 2007, but given the current state of modern African-American literature, I firmly believe that it bears repeating. I hope that all aspiring and established African-American authors will read it and engage in open and honest discussion about it:

On Saturday November 3rd, I had the privilege of being the featured author at a booksigning held at a prominent African-American owned bookstore in Bowie, Maryland. I was shamelessly hawking my book of original poetry entitled, “Reflections Of A Confused Middle Class Black Youth”. Over the course of the three hours that I was in the bookstore signing books, talking to customers, and observing their buying habits, I noticed something troubling. Despite the fact that the bookstore’s inventory included a variety of works by esteemed politicians and scholars (e.g. Frantz Fanon, Randall Robinson, Michael Eric Dyson, Charles Rangel, Juan Williams, Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Maya Angelou, Cornel West and others), most of the patrons were buying what I like to call “Black sex-in-the-hood” stories by authors like Zane, Omar Tyree, and any other black author “du jour” who managed to fit enough drug references, gang references, sexual escapades, and four letter words into their manuscript to get a book deal from some money-hungry publishing company that was willing to exploit black sterotypes in order to make a quick buck. Sadly I thought to myself, where have all the true black radicals gone? Whatever happened to the afro-wearing, dashiki-sporting brothers and sisters who used to pull us kids aside and tell us about Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and W.E.B. DuBois? What happened to the Black public school teachers who would willingly risk their jobs by sneaking the writings of Booker T. Washington and Carter G. Woodson into our curriculum before teaching multiculturalism in school was in vogue? And then I realized what happened…they all moved to the suburbs, got good government and private industry jobs, raised pampered children, got older, and now they have grandchildren who are so blinded by the illusion that we have overcome that they freely and proudly call each other “nigga” while reading books containing imagery and language that is so demeaning that I wouldn’t wipe my behind with their pages.

Is it just me, or does it seem like every positive achievement that President Obama makes just seems to drive his most vocal and passionate detractors further and further “off the deep end”? The recent elimination of Osama Bin Laden by our military (Seal Team 6 in particular), that occurred under the current administration, has got the “anti-Obama” crowd so flustered that they are contradicting themselves. When President Obama accurately pointed out that our current economic crisis began under President Bush’s administration, many Republicans scolded Obama for trying to use Bush a scapegoat, rather than take full responsibility for the economic woes that were taking place on President Obama’s watch. Yet, when Osama Bin Laden was killed by American military forces, while President Obama was Commander-In-Chief of those forces, a legion of GOP talking heads couldn’t wait to talk about how all Obama did was capitalize on intelligence, and military provisions that President Bush had put in place. I’m confounded by the response by many on the right to the news of Bin Laden’s death, especially when they have been so vehement in their assertion that a sitting President is ultimately responsible for both the failures and successes that occur while he is office. Recently, right-wing talk radio juggernaut, Rush Limbaugh uttered a sentence that I never thought I would live to see come out of his mouth: “Thank God for President Obama”. I was actually about to give ol’ Rush “his props” for humbling himself enough to give President Obama credit for doing something positive until he launched into a rant full of backhanded compliments and facetious hyperbole that made it clear that made it clear, at least to me, that he believed Obama should receive little or no credit for an event that symbolized the ultimate retribution against an enemy who has ordered the killing of Americans, and that provided a much needed sense of closure for the victims and first responders of “9/11″. You can watch the video and decide for yourself, but I think this diatribe proves that Limbaugh’s beef with Obama is about something deeper than just policy.

On April 30, 2011, C-Span aired The White House Correspondents Dinner. This particular dinner is always one of my favorite events to watch because it allows us to see politicians, media types, and celebrities in more “down-to earth” and self-deprecating light. It’s almost like watching a “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” of Washington, D.C. personalities, newsmakers and attitudes. Unless you’ve been living “under a rock” lately, you have been forced to witness the manufactured controversy over President Obama’s birth and citizenship status. The most prominent and well known ringleader of this spectacle is reknowned real-estate mogul and reality show host, Donald Trump. For several months, Mr. Trump has maintained that Obama should end this “controversy” by showing his birth certificate to the American people in order to prove that he is a “constitutionally legitimate” president. A few days before, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Obama’s long form birth certificate was released, thereby providing documentation stating that President Obama was indeed born in the United States. Now for the sake of full disclosure, I must admit that as an American in general, and an African-American male in particular, I have held a less than favorable opinion of Mr. Trump’s pursuit of this particular issue. I was of the understanding that the requirement for Black folks to “show their papers” had ended almost 200 years ago. In his address to the dinner audience, President Obama willingly made fun of himself as well as his Vice President, Joe Biden. However, for me, the highlight of the evening was when President Obama, employed his wit and impeccable comedic timing to expose Mr. Trump’s “quest for truth” and potential 2012 presidential run for the charades that they are.

Additionally, this visit gave her another connection to President Barack H. Obama, and what others see as his Presidential duty to, and vision for, our country. She had the privilege of being a firsthand witness to an academic discussion about critical issues in America. Though I may not agree with several of Mr. Smiley’s critiques of President Obama’s performance, I did enjoy hearing his views and exploring how they could help my daughter form her own views and ideas regarding race, education, and politics.

First, a little bit about me and how this book came to be…

So, let’s chat. I love chatting! And meeting new people, especially moms.

I am a mom, I have a mom, and I have worked with moms for years as a childbirth educator. And my writing style is much like my teaching style, telling things like they are with truth, humor and transparency.

I hated it when the instructor told me in Lamaze class that the contractions wouldn’t hurt. That was simply not true. And I vowed then and there that everything I did in life had to be truthful, but that sometimes the truth hurts so humor tempers lots.

Anyway, I have four kids, two adult sons, 28 and 25 and two younger daughters, eleven and thirteen, and for those who wonder about the gap, our third child was actually the only one truly, truly planned for the time she arrived, as she was adopted and brought home from Vietnam at five months of age.

My husband and I have been married for almost thirty years and met in college and have hung in and on ever since. We live in a small town in Central PA where he is a physician and I spend most of my time after three pm in the car.

The opportunity to write this book came to be as a result of a totally divine happenstance conversation I had with editor extraordinaire and grace dispenser Kim Bangs who invited me to submit a concept sheet and then proposal for this book.

Well, what about that soft spot for moms?

Moms have a tough job, don’t you think?

We do have the Bible, and not to minimize that as an instruction manual in right living by any stretch of the imagination, but it tends to come in after friends and family and all their free advice, that can be pretty costly…

So the question arose, how can we take Biblical wisdom and stories, role models and examples, and weave them into relevant (and funny) stories to encourage moms? I know I need encouragement! Everyone else’s kids may be perfect, but mine are NOT. And, shocker, neither am I. But guess what? Neither were many of the moms, ok, all of the moms in the Bible. Remember, Jesus has the corner on the market in the perfection department, so God has provided lots of examples of moms and how they dealt with different situations, similar to what current day moms deal with. Truly, there is nothing new under the sun. But, the story of the Bible is one of redemption, and moms need to remember that.

So, the opening story for Genesis, is titled, “E is for Eve and Epidurals.”

So, tell us a little bit about how the book is laid out, and who is Henrietta Mears?

The book is inspired by the writing of Henrietta Mears, renowned Bible Teacher from Hollywood Presbyterian Church in the 1940’s and on. She believed in making the Bible accessible to everyone, and wrote her hallmark publication, What the Bible is All About, and was the founder of Gospel Light Publishing, Regal’s (the publisher of this book) parent company. So Regal has now published two devotionals inspired by her writing.

The book is comprised of 66 chapters, one for each book of the Bible, each one bit sized for busy moms.

Each chapter starts off with a brief section entitled “Snapshot from Henrietta” which serves as a basic overview for that particular book of the Bible. It is then followed by selected Scriptures, also inspired by the writing of Miss Mears, with one specific Scripture from among her selections highlighted. This Scripture is one that has particular relevance to moms.

A short one sentence synopsis precedes each story under the heading, “Momento” and then is followed by the story under the heading, “Mama Mia” which focuses on a mom or mom theme.

Each story is followed by an encouragement, “Lightening the Mother Load” and then closes with questions for reflection under “Musings for Moms.”

Tell us a little about the stories; some of these titles make me laugh.

I am so glad they make you laugh. Every mom who has gone through labor can relate to labor pain. Well, it says there right in the Bible, women will experience pain in childbirth, so E is for Eve (the grande dame mama) and epidurals…

Then there are others, like, “Bath”-Is That for Bathing or Bathsheba? (Being noticed and admired…); “White Teeth and Plastic Surgery” (paying attention to appearances); “Mean Girls 101” (raising great daughters); and “Too Much Idling Will Ruin Your Engine” (Gossiping).

But the stories are relevant, honest, and will result in many nods of recognition. I am simply the scribe (oh, and experiencer of most of the stories, which are all true, although some names have been changed….)

But aren’t Moms too busy to read?

I will be the first mom to admit that we are busy…and I often fall asleep at night, sometimes drooling, while trying to read. But these chapters are bite sized, uplifting and include lots of Scripture, and can be read on the go. They are great for the car or purse. Plus, with the Bible overview, if you have friends who don’t think the Bible is particularly relevant, or not for them, this is perfect to introduce them to the Bible as the real deal!

Is this for all moms, or just young moms?

The challenges that moms face are really universal throughout their lifetime. It may be a different story, but ultimately it is the same script. It may be sleepless nights with a colicky baby, but problems and not understanding what is wrong continues with your kids through a lifetime (sorry, if you have young kids you probably didn’t just want to read this…)

It includes single moms, young moms, older moms, and moms who aren’t yet moms. There are struggles in yearning to be a mom and God’s answers and timing that are also written about with bittersweet honesty.

Have you had experience with tough times in parenting?

Absolutely. But because God is in the grand business of redemption, while it doesn’t condone wrongs, He will use mistakes to help us reach out to others. I have experienced crisis pregnancy, pregnancy loss, infertility, adoption and motherhood as a young fool, and older fogie…remember, we have seventeen years between number one and four. Our adult sons have had struggles (one son’s struggle with substance abuse is what paved the way to my relationship with Christ) and just real life issues, which would make it into my annual Christmas letter, and is why I no longer write one (no, I write a book instead…)

How has this book been redemptive to you?

That’s a great question, because the first draft of this manuscript was, well, a little let’s just say, sharp (ok, downright caustic in some places) and that showed me, through the eyes of another, that I still had significant healing to go through in my relationship with my own mother. And it is amazing how God has accomplished that, through allowing me to write, re write and then learn from Him through the writing of this book.

What kind of feedback have you had so far?

You know, it’s been really encouraging. Moms are relieved that they are not alone, that there is someone else who will acknowledge that they don’t have it all together (and don’t drive a clean car, either…) I have had so many women remark that they felt like I was just chatting with them over coffee, that the stories are so real to life. And that’s what we need isn’t it? Encouragement from others that we journey through life together, God loves us, will redeem our mistakes, and then enable us to share with the next sojourner on the journey of life.

What else would you like to share?

I would love for people to join the conversation, come stop by for a visit at my web site: http://www.kathypride.com/, also known as The Mennonite Diva. Friend me on Facebook, although there I listed my “full” name for some unknown reason, Katherine Pride (so formal) follow my blog on the home page of my website, and just hang out.

Wait just one minute…did you say Mennonite Diva? Tell me about that.

I worship at a Mennonite Church where I also serve as the Outreach and Missions Director, and I love pink and having fun. So please drop by!
